In 1991 Donald Abbott, a fan of the original Wizard of Oz story, wrote a prequel novella called How the Wizard Came to Oz. There are some passing similarities to this movie, due to the shared source material. However, the character treatment is very different, and the illustrations are rigorously faithful to the original novel's first edition. E.g., Oz and the two Wicked Witches appear very elderly. Reportedly, Abbott was in talks with a low budget studio in 2013 to produce a film version of his novellas. The project has lain in development hell since 2017.
