Quando Oscar Diggs (James Franco), illusionista di un piccolo circo, dalla discutibile etica, viene trasportato dal polveroso Kansas nel fantastico Regno di Oz, pensa di aver vinto alla lotteria: fama e fortuna a sua completa disposizione. Coinvolto suo malgrado nei conflitti del Regno di Oz e dei suoi abitanti, Oscar deve capire chi è buono e chi è cattivo prima che sia troppo tardi.
