The poem by Tennyson, 'In Memorium', that Abe and Nuala frequently discuss throughout their scenes was also recited by Dr. Casares in La spina del diavolo (2001) while he comforts the dying Carmen after the orphanage blows up. Appropriately, Nuala recites the same poem when she dies in Abe's arms and they tenderly say good-bye.
