In all three movies directed by Kevin Kostner, the main character, performed by himself, loses his "pet friend", all violently killed by his enemies. In Dances with Wolves they shot the wolf; in Open Range they shot his dog; in The Postman they kill and eat his mule. Also, in all three movies, KC plays a lonely guy who prefers to live simple, keep away from problems and keep things for himself, until the course of events mobilize him to become "the man who solve things" or, in other words, "the hero".
