Montgomery Brewster, detto Monty, di mestiere fa il lanciatore in una squadra di baseball. Un giorno gli muore un prozio che gli lascia in eredità trecento milioni di dollari. Con una sola clausola: dovrà sperperarne trenta entro un mese. Con l'ulteriore avvertenza che non potrà acquistare case, terreni o altri beni durevoli. Né potrà rivelare ad alcuno le ragioni di questa improvvisa mania per lo sperpero.
