Roy Hobbs, è un ragazzo dallo straordinario talento naturale per il baseball. Dopo la morte del padre, che l´aveva spinto a dedicarsi al baseball, parte per Chicago ma, poco prima del primo provino della sua vita con i Chicago Cubs conosce Harriet che, dopo averlo invitato nella sua stanza di albergo, prima gli spara, ferendolo gravemente, e poi si suicida, distruggendogli in un solo attimo tutti i sogni di gloria. La storia riparte 16 anni dopo, quando un Roy Hobbs ormai trentacinquenne si trova a dover lottare per farsi largo in una squadra di secondo ordine, i N.Y. Knights. Qui si innamora della nipote dell’allenatore, Memo Paris. Dopo tanta panchina, grazie al suo talento fuori dal comune ed alla sua mazza (soprannominata “Wonderboy”, costruita dal legno di un tronco d’albero colpito da un fulmine), porterà i Knights alla finale di Lega ed alla vittoria nonostante il giornalista Mercy, che indaga sul suo passato, la corruzione sempre in agguato ed i malanni fisici.
