L'ex primo ministro britannico Adam Lang vive su un'isola negli Stati Uniti con la moglie, la segretaria e le guardie del corpo. Viene raggiunto da un ghost writer incaricato di rivedere da cima a fondo la sua autobiografia. Lo scrittore va a sostituire il precedente ghost writer che è morto cadendo da un traghetto in circostanze misteriose. In breve tempo lo scrittore comprende di essersi accollato un'impresa scottante e non solo sul piano letterario. Lang viene infatti accusato di avere, nel corso del suo mandato, consentito la tortura di prigionieri sospettati di terrorismo e di avere inconfesssati legami con la Cia.
