Don Pedro, Claudio, Benedick e don John tornano dalla guerra e raggiungono la villa del ricco Lonato. Qui Benedick ritrova Beatrice, con la quale ha da sempre un rapporto alquanto contraddittorio. Claudio invece è innamorato, ricambiato, della splendida Hero. E mentre tutti tramano per fare sposare Benedick e Beatrice, don John ordisce un losco inganno perché Claudio e Hero si lascino (insinua dubbi sulla virtù della ragazza).
