John Bernard Brooks, celebre pistolero ormai vecchio e gravemente ammalato, prima di morire decide di affrontare un'ultima volta tre suoi acerrimi nemici. Torna quindi a Carson City per attuare il suo disegno, ma deve fare i conti con lo sceriffo del luogo che gli è apertamente ostile. John avrà il suo ultimo duello: uccisi i rivali, ma ferito a sua volta a tradimento, muore perpetuando la propria leggenda.
