Un padre (Mantegna) scopre che il proprio figlio Josh, di sette anni, ha una predisposizione per il gioco degli scacchi. Decide di fargli prendere lezioni da un ex grande campione (Kinsley) che paragona il talento del bambino a quello del più famoso scacchista americano: Bobby Fisher. Il bambino inizia così la sua carriera. Ma molto presto il padre si rende conto di come questo gioco si possa trasformare in una totalizzante e malsana passione che può isolare dal resto del mondo da chi ne è pervaso. È un grande rischio per il bambino che ormai difficilmente riuscirà a sottrarsi dai meccanismi del successo.
