Ricardo Valenzuela è un giovane bracciante di origine messicana che vive in California. La sua passione per la musica è contrastata dalla famiglia (particolarmente difficili sono i rapporti con il fratellastro Bob), ma lui non demorde. Con lo pseudonimo di Ritchie Valens, nel 1958, diventa un celebre rappresentante della nuova musica, il rock'n'roll. Ma alle soglie della celebrità muore in un incidente aereo.
