Tintin è un giovane reporter col vizio dell'avventura che non disdegna nel tempo libero cose meno straordinarie, come passeggiare per i mercatini, fermarsi per un ritratto o per acquistare il modellino di una nave che nasconde un immancabile segreto. Un segreto che l'infido Sakharine vuole sottrargli a tutti i costi e con tutti i mezzi. Ma a difenderlo e ad affiancarlo ci pensano i maldestri Thomson e Thompson e l'impavido Snowy, un candido fox terrier amabile con gli amici e implacabile coi nemici. Derubato del prezioso veliero Tintin si mette sulle tracce del ladro finendo prigioniero sul cargo dell'ebbro Capitan Haddock e libero nella più grande delle avventure. Attraverso mari burrascosi e deserti torridi, a bordo di una scialuppa o di un idrovolante, cavalcando onde o polene a foggia di unicorno, il 'sobrio' Tintin e l'alcolico Capitan Haddock troveranno il più grande dei tesori: l'amicizia.
