Andy e Tracy sono una coppia di novelli sposi desiderosi di avere figli. Recentemente si sono trasferiti a Westerly, dove Andy è il preside del locale college femminile e Tracy lavora come volontaria nell'asilo nido. La tranquilla vita del college viene scossa da alcuni misteriosi casi di stupro e omicidio. Nel frattempo nell'ospedale di Westerly arriva un giovane chirurgo, il Dr. Jed Hill, che diventa un eroe salvando la vita ad una delle giovani vittime del maniaco. Andy incontra Jed e scopre che è un suo vecchio compagno di scuola. Decide di affittargli l'ultimo piano della casa di sua proprietà. Tracy accusa forti dolori addominali, finché, a causa di una ciste ovarica, ha un'emorragia interna e viene portata d'urgenza in ospedale. Jed Hill scopre che Tracy è incinta. L'intervento comporta la perdita del bambino; e, un fatale errore di Jed rende Tracy sterile. Distrutta, Tracy decide di far causa al chirurgo e di separarsi da Andy.
