Un'inquietante apparizione, a somiglianza di un'enorme e raccapricciante falena, terrorizza gli abitanti di Point Pleasant, preannunciando tragedie e incubi collettivi. La moglie del giornalista John Klein (Richard Gere) muore in un incidente stradale che sembrerebbe causato proprio dalla misteriosa e agghiacciante apparizione. E Klein, due anni dopo, si ritrova per caso proprio nella stessa cittadina ad indagare, aiutato dalla bionda poliziotta Laura Linney, sulle allucinazioni collettive di cui sembrano soffrire tutti gli abitanti.
