Alan Clay si trova in Arabia Saudita per mostrare al Sovrano di quel paese un rivoluzionario sistema di teleconferenze olografico-tridimensionali e concludere, per la società per cui lavora, l’affare del secolo. Ma quando scopre che il sovrano è assente da molti mesi e che la città presso cui avrebbe dovuto installare il sistema di teleconferenze non è altro che un cantiere a cielo aperto nel deserto, inizierà per Alan un viaggio fatto di attese e scoperte negli usi e costumi di una realtà così differente dalla sua, trasformando il viaggio in un’esperienza culturale straordinaria
