Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale alla USS Indianapolis e al suo equipaggio guidato dal capitano Charles McVay viene affidata una missione top secret. Ma durante la traversata l’incrociatore viene affondato da un siluro giapponese. Vista la segretezza della missione la nave non viene soccorsa e dopo 5 giorni nelle acque infestate da squali, dei 1197 membri dell’equipaggio solo 317 vengono ritrovati ancora in vita. Per nascondere le proprie colpe il Governo degli Stati Uniti, qualche mese dopo, chiama McVay a giudizio davanti la Corte Marziale.
