Mitsuha è una studentessa che vive in una piccola città rurale e desidera trasferirsi a Tokyo, nella grande metropoli dove ogni sogno si può realizzare. Taki è uno studente di liceo che vive proprio a Tokyo, ha un lavoro part-time in un ristorante italiano, ma vorrebbe lavorare nel campo dell’arte o dell’architettura. Una notte, Mitsuha sogna di essere un giovane uomo, si ritrova in una stanza che non conosce, ha nuovi amici e lo skyline di Tokyo si apre dinnanzi al suo sguardo. Nello stesso momento Taki sogna di essere una ragazzina che vive in una piccola città di montagna che non ha mai visitato. Ma quale sarà il segreto che si cela dietro questi strani sogni incrociati?
