Dre Parker è un ragazzino di dodici anni cresciuto a Detroit da una madre affettuosa e apprensiva. Lasciata loro malgrado l'America volano insieme alla volta della Cina e di una vita da inventare. Dre prova ad adattarsi ai nuovi compagni e alla diversa cultura ma un gruppo di teppistelli, che praticano il kung fu, non sembra gradire la sua presenza e la sua esoticità. Umiliato e vessato quotidianamente, Dre trova conforto nei sorrisi dolci di Mei Yin, compagna di classe col vizio e il talento del violino. Bersaglio di un ennesimo attacco, viene soccorso e salvato dal signor Han, responsabile della manutenzione del suo condominio. Impressionato dalla performance atletica dell'uomo, Dre ne diventa presto l'allievo prediletto. Nel suo cortile battuto dalla pioggia e dai ricordi, il ragazzino imparerà a disciplinare il carattere e ad affrontare con onore i nemici.
