Grantham, Virginia. Nello scantinato di una casa teatro di un misterioso duplice omicidio viene trovato anche il cadavere di una giovane donna. Nessuno sa chi sia e perciò viene denominata Jane Doe, nome generico. L'esperto medico legale Tommy Tilden, assistito dal figlio Austin, è incaricato di eseguire l'autopsia di Jane Doe per individuare le cause della morte, che sono ignote. Il corpo è in condizioni perfette, senza alcun segno evidente di ferite o ecchimosi. Che cosa quindi ha ucciso la ragazza? Questo è il mistero che padre e figlio devono svelare attraverso l'autopsia. Polsi e caviglie risultano fratturati, gli occhi grigi, la lingua recisa. Una mosca, inoltre, esce dal naso di Jane. Più procede l'analisi, più il mistero si infittisce in un clima di orrore che non può che sfociare nell'orrore vero e proprio. E intanto, fuori, è in arrivo una tempesta epocale.
