Da qualche parte nello spazio profondo, un campo elettrico scarica la sua forza alla velocità della luce e minaccia la sopravvivenza della Terra. L'origine viene presto identificata e il Maggiore Roy McBride incaricato della missione che dovrebbe liquidare il problema. Ma le cose non sono così semplici perché Roy, soldato decorato oltre i confini della Terra, è il figlio di Clifford McBride, pioniere dello spazio partito ventinove anni prima per cercare segni di vita su Nettuno. Arenata tra i suoi satelliti, la nave del padre è la causa delle scariche elettriche che colpiscono la Terra. Astronauta performante e figlio devoto, Roy è il cavallo di Troia per stanare Clifford. Un cavallo indomabile che cerca risposte all'abbandono e una via altra per tornare finalmente a casa.
