Tornati a casa dopo la terribile esperienza della guerra civile, i fratelli Frank e Jessie James vedono il loro fratello minore ucciso da un agente delle ferrovie al quale era stata pagata la vendita della terra di famiglia. Di fronte all'indifferenza dei Nordisti, che sostengono gli interessi della via ferrata, Jessie decide di farsi giustizia da sé. Insieme con Frank e ai fratelli Younger forma una banda di ribelli che si oppone alle atrocità commesse dai soldati dell'Unione. I loro assalti suscitano la dura reazione dei Nordisti, che assoldano l'investigatore privato Pinkerton per stanarli. La caccia di quest'ultimo si trasformerà in una guerra mortale.
