Nell'Inghilterra rurale di fine '700 un giovane aristocratico a cui non difettano le ricchezze, Charles Bingley, affitta la tenuta vicina a quella dei Bennet, a cui non difettano invece le figlie da maritare. Una sera, durante una festa danzante, Bingley fa il suo ingresso nella sala scatenando lo scompiglio fra le fanciulle del paese che desiderano un giro di danza e un (buon) partito. Accompagnato dall'altezzosa sorella e dal bello quanto presuntuoso Signor Darcy, Bingley si innamora perdutamente della primogenita dei Bennet, la timida e placida Jane. Amore a prima vista sarebbe anche per Darcy e la secondogenita Bennet, Lizzie, se non fosse per quella loro indole indomita e poco incline al confronto.
