Nina è una ballerina del New York City Ballet che sogna il "ruolo" e un amore che spezzi l'adolescenza mai finita. Incalzata dalla madre, si sottopone ad un allenamento sotto lo sguardo di Thomas Leroy. Coreografo appassionato e deciso a farne una stella, Leroy le assegna la parte della protagonista nella sua versione del "Lago dei cigni". Sul palcoscenico Nina sarà Odette. Eterea e piena di grazia Nina incarna alla perfezione il candore del cigno bianco e con difficoltà il suo doppio nero e tenebroso, che in una superba variazione ingannerà il suo principe e la voterà al suicidio. La ricerca del suo lato oscuro e della consapevolezza della propria sessualità la condurranno verso una tempesta emozionale e all'incontro con Lily, insidiosa rivale in nero. Dietro le quinte Nina si strugge e si predispone a 'doppiare' il suo cigno bianco.
