E' il racconto che Paul Edgecomb fa all'amica Elaine Connelly in una casa di riposo. Sono passati circa sessanta anni da quando lavorava come capo delle guardie del braccio della morte nel penitenziario di Could Mountain. Durante la grande depressione, nel carcere del sud degli Usa, Edgecomb si occupava di quattro assassini che attendevano di compiere la loro ultima passeggiata lungo il 'Miglio verde', il corridoio rivestito di linoleum verde che li avrebbe condotti nella stanza della sedia elettrica. Fra questi c'era anche John Coffrey, un ragazzone nero condannato per l'omicidio di due gemelline di nove anni. Nonostante avesse le dimensioni e la forza per uccidere chiunque, Coffrey aveva un carattere semplice e ingenuo: era davvero lui il colpevole?
