New York, 1961, due bande sono in guerra per il controllo del West Side. Da una parte i Jets, i 'veri' americani, figli di immigrati italiani o polacchi, dall'altra gli Sharks, portoricani, sbarcati di recente. In mezzo Tony e Maria. Lui è il fondatore pentito dei Jets, da cui ha preso le distanze dopo la prigione, lei è la sorella romantica di Bernardo, leader impetuoso degli Sharks. Tony e Maria si amano perdutamente e a dispetto dell'ostilità tra le gang, che provano a correggere con le canzoni. Ma chiedete a Romeo e Giulietta, l'amore non vince sull'odio, nemmeno in musica.
