Death Race 2 si svolge in un futuro molto vicino, quando l'economia degli Stati Uniti inizia a declinare e la criminalità violenta inizia la sua spirale fuori controllo. Per contenere la crescita della popolazione criminale, una vasta rete di fini di lucro, nuove prigioni private, la creazione di una sottocultura senza leggi governata da bande criminali, assassini a sangue freddo e sociopatici. La peggiore di queste carceri è Terminal Island. Il poliziotto-killer Carl Lucas arriva sull'isola a servire la sua condanna a vita mentre uno spietato e ambizioso personaggio televisivo September Jones lancia il suo ultimo reality show, Death Race. Un brutale derby di demolizione sul cortile della prigione in cui i prigionieri vengono contrapposti gli uni contro gli altri in veicoli pesantemente armati e in acciaio rinforzato, Death Race offre al vincitore il premio finale: la libertà. Quando Lucas aderisce per essere un pilota, il palco è pronto per la nascita di un pilota leggendario.
