Bretagna, Francia, 1770. Marianne, una pittrice, è incaricata di realizzare il ritratto di nozze di Héloïse, una giovane donna che ha appena lasciato il convento. Héloïse è però riluttante al matrimonio e Marianne deve ritrarla senza che lei lo sappia, osservandola di giorno e lavorando di nascosto di notte. Tra le due pian piano nascerà un rapporto fatto di intimità e attrazione, destinato a un drammatico epilogo.
