Kyoto, periodo Heian. In un Giappone ancora dilaniato dai lasciti del dopoguerra, Kurosawa Akira ritorna a un'altra epoca di morte e sofferenza, quel periodo Heian in cui di fronte alla porta del tempio di Rashô non scorrevano che sangue, violenza e frode.
