Hodaka è uno studente delle superiori che decide di scappare di casa e da una remota isola si trasferisce a Tokyo. In città inizialmente fa fatica a mantenersi perché non è in grado di lavorare legalmente a causa del suo status di minorenne in fuga, ma finalmente trova un lavoro come scrittore per una piccola rivista sull'occulto. Dopo aver iniziato il suo lavoro, il tempo diventa sempre più piovoso giorno dopo giorno. In un angolo della città affollata e frenetica, Hodaka incontra una ragazza di nome Hina. Costretti dalle circostanze, Hina e il fratello minore vivono insieme, anche se accettano la situazione allegramente. Hina ha anche un potere: è in grado di fermare la pioggia e schiarire il cielo.
