Nei primi anni Ottanta, il drammaturgo di successo Georg Dreyman e la sua compagna di sempre, la famosa attrice Christa-Maria Sieland, si trasferiscono a Berlino Est. I due sono considerati dalla DDR tra i più importanti intellettuali del regime comunista e sono tenuti in grande considerazione, malgrado in cuor loro Georg e Christa-Maria non siano sempre allineati con la linea del partito. Un giorno il ministro della cultura assiste ad uno spettacolo dell'attrice e se ne innamora. Chiede allora a Gerd Wiesler, uno dei più valorosi agenti della Stasi, di avvicinare la coppia, conoscerla meglio, ed osservare ogni loro spostamento e interesse. Sarà la vita di Gerd ad essere cambiata dal rapporto con lo scrittore.
