Anno 1462, Costantinopoli era caduta. I musulmani turchi dilagavano in Europa, minacciando tutto il mondo cristiano. Dalla Transilvania si levò a difesa della chiesa un cavaliere rumeno del sacro ordine del Dragone, conosciuto come Draculia. Quando ritornò a casa, scoprì che Elisabeta, principessa romena nonché sua moglie, era morta suicida quando ricevette, dai turchi sconfitti, la falsa notizia della morte dell'amato marito. Alle parole del prete, che sentenziò la dannazione di Elisabeta in quanto suicida, rinnegò Dio e la chiesa, che aveva difeso, e diventò un vampiro.
