Daphne, una neo-hippy diciassettenne di New York, nonostante il parere contrario di sua madre Libbie, si reca a Londra alla ricerca di suo padre, Henry, un aristocratico inglese che è all'oscuro della sua esistenza. Henry, rampollo di una famiglia aristocratica che sta per candidarsi alle elezioni politiche, aveva conosciuto Libbie durante un viaggio in Marocco, ma per via della sua diversa condizione sociale, la ragazza era stata allontanata dai genitori di Henry, nonostante aspettasse un bambino. L'arrivo di Daphne a Londra sconvolge Henry, che sta per sposarsi con un'altra donna, che ha anche lei una figlia, Clarissa. Quando Henry fa partecipare anche Daphne al ballo delle debuttanti però la ragazza si sente a disagio e decide di tornare in America da sua madre.
