Tra il 1953 e i primi anni Settanta, in Georgia, si sviluppa il rapporto tra una vecchia, bizzosa e burbera signora ebrea e il suo autista di colore, rapporto tra padrona riluttante e servitore saggio che si trasforma in un'amicizia solidale. In filigrana al racconto s'iscrive, con delicatezza, un discorso sul razzismo e sulle minoranze etniche negli USA. Pur con un pizzico di melassa sentimentale, scritto da Alfred Uhry che adattò una sua pièce (premio Pulitzer), è un buon film, intelligente, accurato. Ebbe 9 nomination e 4 Oscar (film, attrice protagonista, sceneggiatura e trucco per l'italiano Manlio Ronchetti). I 2 protagonisti sono strepitosi, D. Aykroyd sorprende con una recitazione sopraffina sotto le righe. J. Tandy (1909-94) ebbe l'Oscar a 80 anni.
