Sergio Vieira de Mello, alto commissario delle Nazioni Unite per i diritti umani, si trova in una Baghdad già conquistata dalla truppe americane nella controversa invasione del 2003. Qui un attento terroristico lo intrappola sotto le macerie insieme al collega e amico Gil Loescher. Mentre Sergio, come ama farsi semplicemente chiamare, si trova tra la vita e la morte ripensa alla sua vita e in particolare alla sua reazione con Carolina, di cui si è innamorato tre anni prima a Timor Est. Qui Sergio ha cercato di portare alla pace la regione e ha pensato poi di ritirarsi a vita più privata, ma non ha saputo resistere alla chiamata di Bush Jr. A Baghdad si è inoltre scontrato con il diplomatico statunitense Paul Bremer sulla riapertura del carcere di Abu Ghraib.
