In una prigione dello Stato del Mississippi, Sam Cayhall è in attesa si essere mandato a morte per l'assassinio di due bambini uccisi con una bomba anni prima, nel 1967. Riceve la visita di Adam Hall, giovane e inesperto avvocato che gli dice di volersi impegnare per salvarlo non solo per motivi professionali ma anche perché è suo nipote. Sam, scontroso e irascibile, sostenitore della razza bianca, si rifiuta di collaborare, e così Adam fa tutto da solo, fino a raggiungere il governatore dello Stato che all'epoca dei fatti aveva incastrato Sam ed ora dovrebbe concedere la grazia. Intanto Adam, con molta pazienza e insistenza, riesce a scavare nel passato della famiglia di Sam (e della sua) e a ricostruire i tragici rapporti tra lui, il figlio morto, ossia suo padre, e la figlia dedita all'alcool. Appare allora chiaro che Sam ha assunto su di sé colpe che erano di altri. La grazia viene negata e Adam resta sconfortato e deluso ma più maturo come uomo e come avvocato.
