Nel 1931 Fritz Lang gira M - Il mostro di Düsseldorf (suo primo film sonoro), in cui un ignoto assassino violenta e uccide numerose bambine senza lasciare alcuna traccia. Nella città viene organizzata una fitta rete di ricerche a cui partecipano anche i mendicanti e i criminali. Così si scopre il primo indizio: l'assassino quando avvicina le vittime fischietta un macabro motivo, tratto dal Peer Gynt di Grieg. Presto il mostro viene individuato da un venditore di palloncini che riesce con un gesso a segnargli sulle spalle una grande M (che sta per Morder, assassino).
