Max Renn (James Woods) è a capo di una piccola stazioncina televisiva specializzata in roba forte e cerca sempre di trovare roba ancora più forte e a poco prezzo per rimpolpare il palinsesto e vincere la graduale assuefazione del pubblico. Uno dei suoi impiegati, Harlan (Peter Dvorsky), riesce ad avere accesso a una stazione televisiva pirata chiamata Videodrome che trasmette film estremi di torture, mutilazioni e cose del genere. Molto interessato, Max vorrebbe quel materiale per la sua televisione e incarica Masha (Lynn Gorman), che abitualmente gli procura i filmati, di scoprire chi ne abbia la proprietà. Masha gli rivela che non si tratta di finzione: sono vere atrocità.
