In un futuro imprecisato lo psicologo Kris Kelvin è incaricato di recarsi in una stazione scientifica presso il pianeta Solaris. Prima della partenza per il lunghissimo viaggio, egli trascorre alcuni giorni nella dacia paterna, consapevole che al suo ritorno non rivedrà l'anziano padre e sua zia Anna. Scorcio della città del futuro, percorsa in automobile da Henri Berton; scena girata ad Akasaka, distretto commerciale del quartiere di Tōkyō Minato Nel frattempo riceve la visita indesiderata di Henri Berton, un ex-astronauta amico del padre, che decenni anni prima, in missione su Solaris, avrebbe assistito a strani fenomeni che lo traumatizzarono rovinandogli la carriera.
