Il regista F.W. Murnau è in procinto di girare il più grande horror muto di tutti i tempi: "Nosferatu"; ma siccome vuole che il suo film sia realistico, chiede a Max Screck, un vero vampiro, di interpretare la parte dello spaventoso Conte Orlak, promettendogli di fargli succhiare il collo dell'attrice tossicodipendente Greta Schroeder alla fine delle riprese. Screck accetta e Murnau giustifica il suo aspetto strano alla troupe dicendo che l'attore segue un suo metodo di recitazione molto particolare, ma certamente non può giustificare perchè debbano sempre girare di notte e perchè alcuni membri della troupe stiano sparendo misteriosamente...
