Bobby Darin è nato per lo spettacolo. A causa di una febbre reumatica contratta da bambino i dottori gli comunicano che non andrà oltre i quindici anni, ma il giovane non si perde d'animo e, con l'aiuto della medicina moderna e il supporto del suo manager, riesce a superare i primi ostacoli che si presentano nella sua vita. A vent'anni Bobby canta nei club e riscuote i suoi primi successi con la hit Splish Splash. Ma Darin vuole di più e insegue caparbiamente i suoi sogni. La canzone Mack the Knife (dall'Opera da tre soldi) lo fa diventare una star e nel frattempo sposa l'attrice Sandra Dee. Sfortunatamente il contrasto tra la nascente fama di lei e i frequenti spostamenti di Darin, mettono in crisi il loro matrimonio. I due finiscono col lasciarsi e Darin si dedica all'attivismo politico. La sua nuova immagine però non piace ai fans e lui infine è costretto a confrontarsi coi suoi demoni per scoprire la sua vera natura.
