Parigi, 1957. Anne Goupil, studentessa di letteratura, durante una festa a cui si è recata in compagnia del fratello Pierre, fa la conoscenza di Philip Kaufman, Gerard Lenz e la loro amica Terry. Kaufman è un giornalista americano sfuggito al maccartismo, Gerard, invece, è un regista di teatro che sta cercando di mettere in scena il "Pericle" di Shakespeare. Durante la serata, il gruppo accenna alla morte di un loro amico spagnolo, Juan, attivista politico deceduto apparentemente per suicidio ma che secondo loro è stato assassinato da persone che potrebbero far subire la stessa sorte a Gerard. Anne decide di aiutare e proteggere Gerard perché vuole scoprire cosa è realmente successo a Juan.
