Nel 1958, durante la guerra d'Algeria, Bruno Forestier, un giovane appartenente a un piccolo gruppo di estrema destra che combatteva contro la resistenza algerina, arrivò dalla Francia a Ginevra. Come copertura per aver disertato l'esercito francese, lavora come fotografo. Il leader del piccolo gruppo, un deputato poujadista, lo accusa di aver ucciso un giornalista radiofonico svizzero, Palivoda, sostenitore della causa algerina. Un amico presenta a Bruno una giovane ragazza che “ha la stessa bocca di Leslie Caron” e che vuole diventare una modella e gli scommette 50 dollari che si innamorerà di lei; poco dopo averlo presentato a Veronica, un'aspirante attrice, mantiene la scommessa. Le Petit Soldat è il secondo lungometraggio di Jean-Luc Godard dopo À Bout De Souffle ed è il primo film di Godard con Anna Karina. Girato nel 1960, venne distribuito solo il 25 gennaio 1963 a causa del divieto di censura.
