Ungheria, Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Una giovane madre lascia la città, minacciata dai bombardamenti, per la campagna. Indotta dal marito, impegnato al fronte, affida i figli alla propria madre, una persona sadica e ostile decisa a piegarli con schiaffi e vessazioni. Resistenti e in attesa di poter riabbracciare i genitori, i due fratelli, gemelli e adolescenti, tengono un diario, regalo del padre, al quale consegnano le scoperte quotidiane e il loro apprendistato alla vita. Fuori dalle pagine del loro grande quaderno intanto la guerra corrompe uomini, donne, bambini.
