Il volgare e ignorante deputato Cam Brady è sicuro che otterrà l'ennesima conferma del suo mandato, nonostante una gaffe irrimediabile, ma non ha fatto i conti con lo strapotere del capitale. I miliardari fratelli Motch, infatti, decisi ad arricchirsi vendendo mezza Carolina del Nord ai cinesi, hanno bisogno di un burattino meno compromesso di Brady da inviare a Washington perché faccia il loro gioco e lo individuano nell'ingenuo Marty Huggins, il figlio idealista di un loro ricco amico. La battaglia tra i due candidati al seggio si tramuta in men che non si dica in una gara spietata a far sfigurare l'avversario nel peggior modo possibile. E più i colpi inferti sono bassi, più aumenta il gradimento nei sondaggi del candidato a cui è riuscito il tiro meschino. Un massacro pubblico che investe immancabilmente la sfera privata dei due protagonisti.
