Tom Merrick, un giornalista che ha vinto un importante premio, ora ha trovato lavoro in un quotidiano. Il reporter è sempre in cerca di uno scoop che gli faccia fare un ulteriore salto di qualità sul nuovo posto di lavoro. Un giorno, mentre sta preparando un articolo, scopre che in tutti i grandi disastri del ventesimo secolo, dall'inabissamento del Titanic, all'esplosione dell'Hindenburg si è sempre aggirato lo stesso uomo. La mattina successiva mentre sta aspettando ad imbarcarsi su un aereo di linea crede di riconoscere quell'uomo tra i passeggeri. Tom si accorge anche che due strani agenti che sembrano aver viaggiato nel tempo lo stanno seguendo.
