Le sorelline Satsuki e Mei si trasferiscono insieme al padre in una nuova casa in campagna. Per le due bambine inizia un viaggio alla scoperta di un nuovo mondo, abitato da creature fantastiche: dai nerini del buio, spiritelli della fuliggine, a buffi esseri di pelo di varie dimensioni, tra cui Totoro, lo spirito buono della foresta!
