Una misteriosa cliente (Astor) si rivolge a Sam Spade (Bogart) per ritrovare una preziosissima statuetta antica, raffigurante un falcone, a cui è interessato anche il gangster Joel Cairo (Lorre): dopo complicate vicende, Spade scoprirà che la statuetta è un falso e che la donna l’ha raggirato per ottenere un ingente somma di denaro.
