Paranormal Activity 3 dovrebbe essere una origin story, che ci mostra la protagonista dei primi due capitoli Katie da giovanissima, alla fine degli anni Ottanta.Nel 1988, le giovani sorelle Katie (Chloe Cserngey) e Kristi (Jessica Tyler Brown) trovano un’entità invisibile che infesta la loro casa. Sebbene apparentemente amichevole, diventa poi ostile, tormentando le due ragazze e la loro famiglia. Una scena dell’inizio del film che si basa sul secondo film, vede Katie (Katie Featherston) che porta una scatola di videocassette a casa di sua sorella Kristi (Sprague Grayden) e dopo averle lasciate Kristi inizia a vederne alcune, girate da suo marito Daniel.
