Al quarto anniversario senza proposta di matrimonio, Anna decide di appellarsi a un'antichissima tradizione irlandese che consente alle donne di pronunciare la fatidica richiesta ai fidanzati che l'hanno tirata per le lunghe, ma solo il 29 di febbraio, vale a dire ogni quattro anni. Trattandosi di un anno bisestile e di 24 ore in tutto a disposizione, la ragazza lascia in fretta Boston per raggiungere Jeremy a Dublino, dov'è in trasferta per lavoro, e mettersi in ginocchio davanti a lui. Ma una turbolenza la catapulta in campagna, dall'altra parte dell'Irlanda, e la costringe ad affidarsi alla compagnia del rude Declan, che una donna ha ingannato e abbandonato, regalandogli un'avversione per la città e un abbonamento per la solitudine.
