Roma e il mondo sono in lutto per la morte del Santo Padre. Distrutto l'anello piscatorio, il camerlengo deve fare fronte al rapimento dei quattro cardinali favoriti alla successione pontificia e alla minaccia della distruzione della Città del Vaticano ad opera degli Illuminati, una confraternita venuta dal passato a rivendicare il primato della scienza sulla Chiesa e sullo Spirito. Riunito in Concistoro per eleggere il nuovo Papa, il collegio cardinalizio assolda Robert Langdon, docente di simbologia religiosa a Harvard. Nemico stimato della Chiesa, che non gli perdona la negazione dell'incarnazione del Verbo, il cavaliere accademico accetta l'investitura e parte alla volta della Capitale. Archiviati acredine e risentimento, il professore e gli uomini della Chiesa, armati di spirito e alabarda, collaboreranno alle indagini e alla risoluzione del mistero. Un mistero nascosto dentro le chiese e sotto le segrete della Città Eterna.
